How to Create a Map
This topic describes how to create a map hierarchy and link items to the map structure. A map is based on a hierarchical list structure; for more information on how to work with hierarchical lists, see Manage Hierarchical Lists. Maps are defined on map documents like Account Map, Employee Map, Fee Type Map and Organization Map.
Define Level Names
The Level Names area allows you to enter a name to describe each level in the map.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Level Number | Enter the level number to name. Each available level in the map is assigned a value 1-10. |
| Name | Enter a descriptive name for the level in the map. This name will help to give that level context in the map structure. |
Define the Map Structure
The Map area allows you to define the hierarchical structure of the map. This can be used in reports to determine how information is grouped and displayed. To create a map structure, you must add map items and use the hierarchical list features, like indent or outdent, to position each map item in the structure. The indentation of the value in the Name column displays where the map item falls in the hierarchy.
For more information on how to use hierarchical lists, see Manage Hierarchical Lists.
Common Map Fields
The first item in the map structure will always be the name of the map. There can only be one root level item in the map structure.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Name |
Enter a name for the map item. |
| Level Name |
Displays the name of the item's level in the map structure. Level names are defined in the Level Names area. For more information, see Define Level Names. |
Link Items to the Map Structure
The link option allows you to link items, such as organizations, to map structure items. Items can only be linked to leaf map items, which are map items that do not have any child map items.
Map items can be linked in the following ways:
- Select the map item and the item that you want to link and then click the Link
button. Once the item is linked, the Link Status column displays a link icon to show that the item has been linked to a map item. - Select the row selector
of the item to link to the map item and drag it to the map item. The map item that will be linked is magnified as the cursor hovers.
If an item was previously linked to a different map item on the map structure, it is unlinked from the original map item and then linked to the new map item.
To unlink an item to the map structure, select the item and click the Unlink
button.
Link Status
The link status of an item is displayed in the Link Status column of its list. To view the map item that it is linked to, double-click on the linked item and the associated map item is selected.
| Name | Icon | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Linked |
|
The account is directly linked to the selected map item. |
| Indirect Link |
|
The account is linked to a child item of the selected map item. This icon is also used when no map item is selected. |
| Other Link |
|
The account is linked to a map item but not to the current map item or a child of the currently selected map item. |
| Blank | When the column is blank, the account is not linked to any map item in the map structure. |
Copy Map
You can use the transformation, for example Copy Employee Map, that is accessed from the Save As or New From function to copy an existing map and the associated mapped properties.
The copy map function applies for the following transformations:
-
Account Map
-
Employee Map
-
Fee Type Map
-
Organization Map
